5/10 Eyes








Reflections on "Brown-eyed Blue-eyed Clips": What can we learn about stereotyping, discrimination, racism, etc? In a well-written six to eleven sentence paragraph, answer the above question in Word. Then post it under comments in the blog under 5/9 Eyes!

  1. We can learn that people can sometimes be lead the wrong way. As long as those people are not being discriminated against they look the other way. People can be afraid to stand up against this since they might be treated that way if they did. When people have the situation flipped around like in the video, people understand how awful it is to be discriminated against. That if everyone had this done that everyone would be able to understand each other from being on both sides. Overall people just need to see that we are all the same and that little differences should not decide how a person is treated.

  2. The Brown- eyed Blue-eyed experiment seems to have very powerful effects on those who watch it; even me. It surprised me how easily third graders were able to turn on each other in a matter of 15 minutes. Through watching the video, I saw how much the thoughts of others affected the academic performance of all the children. On the day blue eyes were on top, their schoolwork showed unbelievable improvements, while brown eyed children seemed slower and less interested in their work. During the second experiment, where adults were the primary focus, it surprised me even further how rudimentary grown adults acted towards each other. I found both clips to be frightening. It’s scary how easily swayed people can be when a common factor is identified as being negative.

  3. There are a lot of things that we can learn about stereotyping, discrimination, and racism. Discrimination can happen to even young children. The Brown-eyed, Blue-eyed clips made people realize how they act towards others in certain situations. People can sometimes influence others by only what they say. Just by saying one thing about someone else could change how people view others. Adults in the clip acted the same way as the third graders did. The blue/brown eyed survey relates to things happening throughout the world.

  4. The Brown-eyed Blue-eyed experiment seemed to hold a lot of interesting results. The people in the experiment acted as if the people who were once their friends were complete enemies just because the color of their eyes. With the children the experiment lead to violence and better academic success, where as the adults seemed to remediate back to act the exact same way as the children. Also with the adults it took almost an hour and a half for them to speak up. I just hope that people after seeing this or being a part of it will help them to realize when discrimination is happening.

  5. I believe that discrimination and stereotyping will always be a part of our everyday life. There is always going to be a group of people who will not accept other because of their race, religion or their color of their skin. It would be great if everyone in our world could accept one another based on whom they are rather than the color of their skin is, religion, or race. The likely hood of this happening is slim to none.

  6. I learned a lot of many things about discrimination and being prejudice towards other people. I also learned a thing or two about racism, and how it’s been around for the longest time. When someone is discriminating against another person because of their appearances or indifferences. Prejudisim is similar to discrimination but affects a certain type, example Jew and Nazis. Racism has been happening since the beginning, there have been many motivational speakers over the years to help stop racism. Many of those speakers have been murdered and a few presidents have been assonated because of their believes. There are numerous things that I have learned from our section on human rights and it’s been very helpful and it’s definitely and eye opener. The Blue eyes Brown eyed experiment shocked me because one lady influenced the thoughts of every single child and adult that took part in the event.

  7. The brown-eyed blue eyed experiment has made the way people act change. For instance, on the first day, the teacher said blue eyes were better, and the blue-eyed children acted different, and were mean to the brown-eyed children. On the second day, the teacher said that she lied and said that the brown-eyed children were better than the blue-eyed children. The children acted different toward the blue-eyed children. When the blue eyed children were “better” than the brown-eyed children, their academic scores were higher than normal, but when the brown-eyed children were “better”, the blue-eyed children academic scores were lower, and not as good; same for the brown-eyed children. When the teacher went to talk to the adults, the adults had the same reaction as the children. At the end of the day, discrimination will be in a good percent of everyday life.

  8. I believe that discrimination and stereotyping will always be in the world. There is always going to be one person who just can’t stand someone’s religion or doesn’t like the person so they attack the people who are the same color or belong to that certain religion. The world will never be completely at peace between individuals. The day the Earth comes to complete peace between individuals, races, ilks, etc, will be the day the Earth stands still.

  9. The brown-eyed, blue- eyed project teaches children and whoever watches it that racism and discrimination has a huge effect on people’s lives. It is amazing how ONE person can make about fifteen third graders think that they are better than others; just because the colors of their eyes are different. While watching the video clips, I learned that stereotyping, discrimination, and racism can happen at any age, in any place around the world. The video also helps children understand that they are all equal, and they shouldn’t look down on somebody who has different color skin, eyes, hair, different religion, race, etc. The results of the clips are truly amazing, and I think that everybody should think the way that this teacher does, and everyone should be treated equal.

There is a lot that we could learn about racism, discrimination, and stereotyping; when the superior eye color thought they were better than the other kids then they started putting each other down and calling each other brown-eyes and blue-eyes. The children quickly changed overnight with their grades and behavior all due to the fact that they felt superior. People make others feel down and depressed just to make themselves feel better and feel like they are in control of others and what they do. Everything that we have learned has pulled us together and made us realize that we need to treat other people like we would treat ourselves. This has made a difference and could change the way people view the world. Also I learned that stereotyping, discrimination and racism are all happening around us all the time and we don’t even realize it.

  11. From the Brown-eyed Blue-eyed experiment, we can learn that human nature can be a cruel thing. By doing this experiment, the teacher quickly turned turned her students on eachother by manipulating their minds. She pointed out the differences and common mistakes of people of one of two specific groups and exaggerated them in order to repress this specific group and turn the other one against them. For example, when the teacher points out a mistake made by someone with blue eyes, she may say that it is common for people with blue eyes to make that mistake and perhaps even exaggerate it a bit in order to emit a deeper impression on the opposite group, the people with brown eyes. Compared to the adults, I believe that the 3rd graders the teacher did the experiment on were easier to manipulate than the adults because of their underdeveloped minds and poor reasoning skills. As a result of the experiment the students learned how stereotyping, discrimination, and racism against others can hurt far worse than they imagined.

  12. We can learn that people will just go along with others and believe what they are told about others. People are naive and they will stereotype or discriminate if they are told too. The third graders displayed the exact same reaction as anyone else would've, which is shocking. When the blue eyed children were inferior, they laughed at and made fun of the children with brown eyes. But, when it was flipped around, they felt horrible about themselves because now they were the minority. The children didn't realize exactly how much their tormenting affected the others, or how it made them feel until they were put in each other’s shoes. This lesson can teach us a lot about discrimination and racism. People really are negatively affected by the words of others. We all know the old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." This old saying is most definitely untrue, the children who had the collars on, were academically affected by what the teacher ant the other children were saying about them. This video series and experiment makes us think about how much of impact we can have on others, just by the words that come out of our mouths. The main lesson we can learn from this experiment is to be careful what we say, and not to go along with authority if we know that what they are saying or doing is wrong! We have to stand up against discrimination!

  13. The Brown Eyed/Blue Eyed clip demonstrated how prejudice can spread through children incredibly easily. The characteristics a child develops often stays with them through growth, so opinions like these can be harmful at such a young age. The experiment also shows how the "majoity" group feels dominant over the "minority", and vice versa when the roles are switched. It's also very interesting how the students turned agaisnt their friends so easily, and how they followed what the teacher taught (claiming that the other eye color was less intelligent, had less recess time, etc.), even though before the experiment they all felt equal. It's important to spread the oppposite of these beliefs, that we are all equal and should never discriminate agaisnt other because of their race, ethnicity, religion, sex, orientation, physical impairments, etc. Hate and prejudice only spreads more anger and likewise feelings, and will only continue to be a never ending cycle.
